This medicine contains the active ingredient Acarbose, which belongs to group of medicines called 'alpha glucosidase inhibitors'. They are used to treat non-insulin dependent diabetes to control the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Acrabose controls blood sugar levels by slowing down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and in that way it reduces the high blood sugar levels which can occur after each meal. It is usually used in combination to the changes in diet or in combination with other sugar-lowering medicines.

Is Acarbose suitable for me?

Acarbose is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to acarbose
• if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients in the tablets
• if you are pregnant, likely to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
• if you are suffering from inflammation or ulceration of the bowel
• if you have or are susceptible to an obstruction in your intestines (gut)
• if you have trouble digesting or absorbing food properly due to a problem with your gut
• if you have a large hernia
• if you have liver disease
• if you have severe kidney disease

You must tell the doctor if:

• you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
• you have any problems with the way your liver works or with the way your kidneys work.
• you have a hernia or if you have recently had surgery on your abdomen.
• you have inflammatory bowel disease.
• you are taking any other medicines.
• you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.

Acarbose interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Acarbose?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take Acarbose exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

These tablets are available in two strengths - 50 mg and 100 mg. The usual starting dose is one 50 mg tablet taken three times a day swallowed with meals. However at the start of the treatment your doctor may recommend that you take your tablets once or twice a day before increasing the dose to three times a day. After six to eight weeks doctor may increase your dose. If you forget to take a dose, do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose, and do not take the tablets between meals. • flatulence (wind)

Common side effects:

• diarrhea

• stomach pain

Uncommon side effects:

• nausea and vomiting (feeling and being sick)

• indigestion

• increase in liver enzymes
