How should I take Acarbose?
This medicine is available in form of a tablet.
You should take Acarbose exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
These tablets are available in two strengths - 50 mg and 100 mg. The usual starting dose is one 50 mg tablet taken three times a day swallowed with meals. However at the start of the treatment your doctor may recommend that you take your tablets once or twice a day before increasing the dose to three times a day. After six to eight weeks doctor may increase your dose. If you forget to take a dose, do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose, and do not take the tablets between meals. Like all medicines Acarbose can cause side effects, including:
Very common side effects:
• flatulence (wind)
Common side effects:
• diarrhea
• stomach pain
Uncommon side effects:
• nausea and vomiting (feeling and being sick)
• indigestion
• increase in liver enzymes
