OSPAMOX

This medicine contains the active ingredient amoxicillin, which belongs to ‘penicillins’. Penicillins are antibiotics which are widely used for the treatment of bacterial infections. Amoxicillin has a wide range of use in the treatment of infections, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, middle ear, gynecological, urinary tract, skin (e.g. cellulitis), meningitis, typhoid, dental abscess, blood poisoning, heart inflammation, Lyme disease and it is also used to prevent the infection if there is a risk of it occurring.

Is Amoxicillin suitable for me?

Amoxicillin is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you have an allergy to any penicillin-type antibiotic
• if you have glandular fever

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• if you are pregnant or breast-feeding
• if you have kidney problems

Amoxicillin interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Amoxicillin?

This medicine is available in form of a capsule, granules for oral suspension and dispersible tablet. All of these forms have different use.

• Dispersible tablets are resolved and stirred in half a glass of water, and should be drank immediately after that.
• Before use the granules should be reconstituted with distilled water into a homogenous suspension. 
• Capsules and oral suspension are swallowed.

You should take amoxicillin exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• Adults and children weighing more than 40 kg usually take 500 mg capsule every 8 hours.
• The usual dose for oral suspension is, for most infections, 5ml of 250mg/5ml of oral suspension to be taken 3 times a day. For more serious infections the dose may be doubled to 10ml of 250mg/5ml 3 times a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Amoxicillin side effects?

Like all medicines amoxicillin can cause side effects, including:

• skin rash
• nausea, vomiting
• diarrhea, colitis
• disturbance of liver enzymes.
• paresthesia (numbness)
• dizziness
• blood disorders
• yeast infection of the mouth or vagina
