ORMIDOL

This medicine contains the active ingredient atenolol which belongs to the group of medicines known as beta-blockers. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in your heart and the heart is then beating evenly and more slowly. Atenolol is prescribed to patients with high blood pressure, chest pain and arrhythmias. It can also reduce the risk of a heart attack if there is a possibility for it.

Is Atenolol suitable for me?

Atenolol is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it if you

• are allergic (hypersensitive) to atenolol or
• to any of the other ingredients in this medicine
• have a very slow heart rate
• have a heart condition to be treated with a pacemaker
• have heart failure
• have low blood pressure
• have poor circulation
• have sick sinus syndrome
• have prinzmetal angina (chest pain)
• have a tumor called phaeochromocytoma
• have higher than normal levels of acid in your blood
• have asthma or other breathing problems

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding
• have problems with the way your kidneys work
• have sugar diabetes
• have psoriasis (a skin problem)
• have a history of allergic reactions
• have myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)

 Atenolol interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Atenolol?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet and a film-coated tablet.

You should take atenolol exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. You will be prescribed your dose according to your needs.

The usual dose for adults and children over 12 years:

• High blood pressure: 50-100 mg a day as a single dose.
• Angina: 100 mg once a day or 50 mg twice a day.
• Irregular heart beat: initial treatment will usually be by injection, followed by a maintenance dose by mouth of 50-100 mg a day as a single dose.
• After a heart attack: initial treatment will usually be by injection, if no response followed by 50 mg by mouth 15 minutes after the injection. A further 50 mg 12 hours later and then 100 mg 12 hours later. 100 mg to be taken once a day thereafter.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Atenolol side effects?

Like all medicines atenolol can cause side effects, including:

Common:

• slow heartbeat
• feeling sick, cold hands and feet
• diarrhea, tiredness, aching and tired muscles
• stomach pains, heartburn and constipation

 Uncommon:

• increased levels of liver enzymes
• sleep disturbances
