Product information

This medicine contains two active ingredients dexamethasone (corticosteroid) and tobramycin (anti-infective). Corticosteroids help to prevent inflammation in the eye. Anti-infectives have effect on a broad range of microorganisms which can cause infection of the eye. This medicine is used for the treatment of inflammation and possible eye infections. Inflammation can occur due to eye surgery, infection or an eye injury.

Is Tobradex suitable for me?

Tobradex is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to dexamethasone, tobramycin or other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you have a mycobacterial, fungal, or viral eye infection

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • have rheumatoid arthritis, Fuch’s dystrophy or a disorder following a corneal transplant
  • have allergic reaction
  • have diabetes, glaucoma or increased eye pressure
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

Tobradex interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Tobradex?

This medicine is available in form of eye drops and eye ointment.

You should take Tobradex exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The usual starting dose for the eye drops is 1 or 2 drops every 2 hours. The usual dose is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours.
  • The usual dose for ointment is small amount applied 3 or 4 times a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Tobradex side effects?

Like all medicines Tobradex can cause side effects, including:

Uncommon:

  • increased pressure in your eye(s)
  • eyelid redness, eyelid swelling
  • eye irritation, eye pain
  • itchy, watery eyes
  • headache
  • runny nose, tight throat

Rare:

  • redness
  • blurred vision
  • dry eye, eye allergy
  • eye surface inflammation
  • bad taste
  • gradual blurring or loss of vision
