LANIBOS

This medicine contains the active ingredient digoxin which belongs to a group of medicines called ‘cardiac glycosides’. These medicines affect your heart by causing it not to beat very fast, and they also make the force of the heartbeat stronger. Digoxin is prescribed for the treatment of heart failure (heart pumps blood weaker than usually) and atrial flutter or fibrillation (heart beats too fast or unevenly).

Is Digoxin suitable for me?

Digoxin is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to digoxin or other ingredients of this medicine
• if you have any heart problems other than those mentioned above

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have recently had a heart attack 
• have low potassium or magnesium levels in your blood
• have high calcium levels in your blood
• have a heart problem caused by a lack of vitamin B
• have kidney problems
• have a lung problem
• have thyroid problems
• have digestion problems
• are pregnant, breastfeeding

Digoxin interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Digoxin?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take digoxin exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs.

• The usual starting dose for adults is between 0.75 and 1.5 mg (3 and 6 tablets) as a single dose or in divided dosed taken every 6 hours.
• The usual maintenance dose is between 0.125 and 0.25 mg daily.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Digoxin side effects?

Like all medicines digoxin can cause side effects, including:

Common:

• slow or irregular heart rate
• nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
• skin rash
• drowsiness or dizziness
• visual disturbances

Uncommon:  

• depression.

Very Rare:

• bruising or bleeding more easily than normal  
• stomach pain
• mental disturbances
• weakness, tiredness
• breast enlargement in men
• loss of appetite
• headache
