This medicine contains the active ingredient Glibenclamide belongs to a group of medicines known as oral hypoglycemic (sulphonylureas). These medicines boost the amount of insulin (hormone produced in pancreas that is responsible for the proper use of sugar in our body) and in that way they control sugar levels in the blood. Glibenclamide is prescribed for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus.

Is Glibenclamide suitable for me?

Glibenclamide is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• If you are allergic to Glibenclamide or other ingredients of this medicine
• If you have type I diabetes  
•  If you have kidney or liver problems
•  If you suffer from ketoacidosis  
•  If you have a severe infection
• If you have reduced consciousness or coma resulting from your diabetes
•  If you have porphyria (blood disease).
•  If you are over 70 years of age.
• If you have serious thyroid or adrenal gland problems

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
• are suffering from stress
• plan to have a surgery
• have ever had a diabetic coma

Glibenclamide interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Glibenclamide?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take Glibenclamide exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs. The usual starting dose is from 2,5 to 5 mg taken once a day (it is recommended to take it after breakfast). The maximum dose for this medicine is 15 mg. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. What are Glibenclamide side effects?

Like all medicines Glibenclamide can cause side effects, including:

Common:

• Rash, itching
• skin inflammation
• jaundice
• changes in blood cells
• fever
• liver problems
• low blood sugar  
• water retention

 Uncommon:

• nausea, vomiting
• problems with blood salt levels
• anorexia
• heartburn
• increased appetite, weight gain
• metallic taste
• diarrhea
