This medicine contains the active ingredient Gliclazide belongs to a group of medicines known as oral hypoglycemic (sulphonylureas). These medicines increase the amount of insulin (hormone produced in pancreas) and in that way they control sugar levels in the blood. Gliclazide is prescribed for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus.

Is Gliclazide suitable for me?

Gliclazide is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• If you are allergic to Gliclazide or other ingredients of this medicine
• If you have type I diabetes  
•  If you have kidney or liver problems
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
•  If you suffer from ketoacidosis  
•  If you have a severe infection
• If you have reduced consciousness or coma resulting from your diabetes
•  If you have porphyria (blood disease).
• If you have serious thyroid or adrenal gland problems

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
• are suffering from stress
• plan to have a surgery
• have ever had a diabetic coma
• have the pituitary gland or adrenal cortex problems
• are at risk of developing low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
• take too high doses of gliclazide

Gliclazide interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Gliclazide?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take Gliclazide exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs. The usual starting dose is from 40 mg (one half of the tablet) to 80 mg taken once a day (it is recommended to take it after breakfast). The maximum dose for this medicine is 320 mg divided into two doses to be taken twice a day. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. What are Gliclazide side effects?

Like all medicines Gliclazide can cause side effects, including:

• stomach pain or discomfort,
• nausea, vomiting,
• indigestion,
• diarrhea, constipation
• rash, redness, itching
• blistering or peeling of the skin
• liver problems
• eye and vision problems
