DOLOKAIN

This medicine contains the active ingredient lidocaine which belongs to a group of medicines called anesthetics. These medicines stop the nerves to send pain impulses to the brain, and this reduces the pain and itching. Lidocaine is used as a local anesthesia in case of: Urethral catheterization, Cystoscopy and Gastrointestinal endoscopy.

 Is Lidocaine suitable for me?

Lidocaine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to lidocaine or to other ingredients of this medicine
• if you have an infection or injury at the affected area

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant or breast-feeding
• have heart, liver, or kidney problems
• have been very ill or weakened
• suffer from epilepsy
• have a malfunction of the heart
• have disease myasthenia gravis 

Lidocaine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Lidocaine?

This medicine is available in form of a gel.  

You should take lidocaine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will depend on your condition and needs.

• The usual dose is 5 to 10 ml (100-200 mg) injected by sterile applicator 5 min before the procedure.
• The maximum dose of 10 to 25 ml is used 5 to 10 minutes before endoscopy of the lower part of gastrointestinal tract.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Lidocaine side effects?

Like all medicines lidocaine can cause side effects, including:

Rare:

• allergic or anaphylactic reaction,
• rash at the application site
• skin lesion, skin injury
• headache
• dizziness

Very rare:

• angioedema
• bronchospasm
• urticaria
