This medicine contains the active ingredient Metformin which belongs to a group of medicines known as biguanide class of anti-diabetic drugs. These medicines help your body to utilize the low amount of insulin (hormone produced in pancreas necessary for the proper use of blood sugar) and in that way they control sugar levels in the blood. Metformin is prescribed for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus.

Is Metformin suitable for me?

Metformin is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• If you are allergic to Metformin or other ingredients of this medicine
• If you have uncontrolled diabetes  
•  If you have kidney or liver problems
• If you suffer from ketoacidosis  
• if you have a severe infection
• if you have acute heart failure, have recently had a heart attack, have severe problems with your circulation or have breathing difficulties
• if you are alcoholic
• If you are pregnant or breast feeding

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
• are planning surgery
• are going to have an X-ray
• have a history of heart disease

Metformin interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Metformin?

This medicine is available in form of a film-coated tablet.

You should take Metformin exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs. The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg taken 2 to 3 times a day or 850 mg taken 2 to 3 times a day. The maximum daily dose is 1000 mg taken 3 times a day. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. • nausea, vomiting
• diarrhea
• abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
