Product information

This medicine contains the active ingredient Metoprolol which belongs to the group of medicines known as beta-blockers. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors which receive nerve signals in your heart and the heart is then beating evenly and more slowly.  Metoprolol is also used in treatment of high blood pressure and angina pectoris (chest pain), arrhythmia and overactive thyroid gland. It can also reduce the risk of a heart attack if there is a possibility for it and prevent migraine attacks.

Is Metoprolol suitable for me?

Metoprolol is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to Metoprolol, beta blockers or to other ingredients of this medicine
  • have asthma or chronic lung disease
  • have severe circulation problem
  • have a tumor of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma),
  • have too much acid in the blood
  • have very low blood pressure
  • have a slow or irregular heart rate
  • if you have certain serious heart or blood vessel disorders

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding
  • have diabetes
  • have any heart problems
  • have any liver or kidney problems
  • are going to be given a general anesthetic during an operation
  • have a type of chest pain called Prinzmetal's angina
  • suffer from dry eyes
  • have (or have had) psoriasis (a recurring skin rash)
  • have a thyroid problem

Metoprolol interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Metoprolol?

This medicine is available in form of a prolonged-release tablet and tablet.

You should take Metoprolol exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • For high blood pressure, the usual starting dose is 100 mg a day.
  • For angina (Chest pain), the usual dose is 50 to 100 mg taken two or three times a day.
  • For other conditions, the usual total daily dose is between 100 and 200 mg.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. Read the information leaflet provided with your medication for additional information. Talk to your doctor if you have any additional questions.

What are Metoprolol side effects?

Like all medicines Metoprolol can cause side effects, including:

  • Headache, dizziness, tiredness
  • Slow heart beat
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
